Will Pappenheimer, MYMIRRORCITY, 2012

MyMirrorCity harnesses the widespread use of instant cell phone snapshots, uploaded to social media space as self-reflection, as momentary chronological diary, as personal broadcast, as response or conversation. This daily practice, for some almost an obsession, is here writ large.

MyMirrorCity transforms the Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, and surrounding areas in the centre of Copenhagen into a city of mirrored buildings. Participants take a picture of themselves (or any image of their desire), upload it, and it then appears on every facet of the buildings around them in an augmented reality layer viewed through a smartphone.

Participants leave their building sized images until the next users decide to add their own. When a second person uploads an image, it appears on alternate building facets so an image dialogue is created. A dialogue from one person to another is created through the ubiquitous presence of the last two participants’ imagery.
